The Art of Luxury Hotels

Luxury hotels and resorts are increasingly collaborating with artists to create original works of art to enhance the look and feel of their public rooms and bedrooms and to differentiate themselves from the competition.
It’s a subject that I explore in detail in the next issue of Sphere magazine but in the meanwhile three other striking examples of this exciting new trend have recently been unveiled.
It rocks:
Stephen Webster's pendants for the
Eden Rock Hotel, St Barts
British Rock 'n' Roll jewellery designer, Stephen Webster has collaborated with the glamorous Eden Rock Hotel on the island of St Barts (www.edenrockhotel.com) to create an exclusive Eden Rocks pendant and earrings which have been inspired by the hotel’s setting on a rock promontory overlooking St. Jean Bay. The ‘Eden Rocks collection’ is available in either 18ct White Gold set with Turquoise or 18ct Yellow Gold set with White Mother Of Pearl- see images attached.  The pendant (which is engraved Eden Rocks)is priced at £4,580 and the earrings £3,650.
This is the first time that Webster has collaborated in this way- the partnership was born through a shared ambience of high luxe glamour with a rock and roll edge in keeping with the hotel. The pieces are available to buy at the flagship Stephen Webster Mount St store in London as well as at the Pop up store at Eden Rock in St Barths.
Creative Director of Stephen Webster and Garrard (the world’s oldest jewellers), Webster blends his love of traditional craftsmanship with his passion for contemporary music, fashion and art to produce modern, unconventional and beautiful jewellery. Heralded for his exquisite and cutting edge designs, Stephen Webster is the recipient of numerous awards and like Eden Rock-St Barths has built a dedicated global fan base. Webster’s clients include Madonna, Kate Moss and Kate Beckinsale.
Sea food for thought:
Alex Monroe's shrimp
for the Goring Hotel
Meanwhile, Theo Fennell, known for his fun, witty pieces is creating a Tortoise Alias bracelet for the island of Mustique - launch date to be announced. The bracelet which was inspired by island life on Mustique, will be initially exclusive to guests and villa owners on the island for a limited period and then following this it will be available to purchase in Theo Fennell stores and stockists.
Back in London, the Goring hotel and celebrated British jewellery designer Alex Monroe - whose famous bumble bee pendent has hung on the necks of the most discerning fashionistas, have collaborated to create an exclusive necklace, the Goring Shrimp, to accompany a special Alex Monroe-inspired afternoon tea at the hotel.
Exclusive to the Goring initially, the quirky yet charming shrimp priced at £165 is hand made by Alex in Silver and plated with Rose Gold – and even has irresistible little eyes made from two black pearls.
The shrimp's tea party:
Alex Monroe-inspired tea
at the Goring Hotel
“As a little boy I would run wild in the Suffolk countryside accompanied by my brothers and a dog called Sheba and buy huge bags of shrimp from the fishermen and sail them home for tea which consisted of a huge pot of tea and crusty white bread smothered with cool butter,” says Monroe. “These teas would last all afternoon until the sun sank below the high walls. So the Goring Shrimp will always remind me of spring afternoons lazing in the walled garden at the Old Parsonage, and of drinking tea of course. The Goring shrimp is a very likeable little chap; there is a great sense of fun about him and a tiny touch of nostalgia. I almost feel guilty that my mouth waters when I see him!”
The Goring Shrimp is set to be one of the most coveted pieces for jewellery lovers this Spring.  It will be available to purchase exclusively at the Goring alongside the Alex Monroe Afternoon Tea, for the month of May 2012.  Thereafter, from June 2012, it can be bought online at www.alexmonroe.com and at Alex Monroe’s new flagship store at London Bridge.
